Wen wants more industry in Muslim regions

BEIJING, Aug. 18 (UPI) --

Premier Wen Jiabao took his government's message to China's Muslim regions, urging locals to work harder to boost industrial and agricultural development.

Wen's visit comes at a time when China's northwest Muslim regions have seen rising separatist violence in recent weeks, resulting in widespread crackdown by the Communist government.

The leader's weekend visit included stops in landlocked Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, the largest Muslim region in the country, China's state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

At a methanol production project, Wen told workers to build up an industrial base that would meet the standards of scientific development, the report said. The goal would be to achieve top quality and technological standards based on resource conservation.

Wen visited an ancient mosque in Yinchuan, capital of the region, where he met with representatives from religious circles and local Muslims.

He also visited several Muslim households, assuring people the government would work with the villagers to fight chronic drought and increase drinking water supply, Xinhua said.
