Passing of shipmate John Nero/Quincy III/CA71

My father, John J. Nero, recently passed away this February 2008. He served on the Quincy III, CA71, in 1945. I do not know what his regular job was, but his battlestation was 20mm machine gunner. He had just turned 18 when he was picked up by the Quincy as it was returning from Normandy and the Roosevelt trip and heading to the Pacific. He was very proud of his time on the Quincy, and in 1960 he hosted its annual reunion in Providence RI. He told me his crew once got credit for splashing a plane, but he admitted he was getting the crew coffee when the whole thing happened. Another mishap occurred when he was mistakenly on deck once when the big guns went off. His hearing was never right after that. He also spoke of the surrender in Tokyo Bay, and the conditions of starvation there at the end of the war. My father also was an amateur boxer and participated in boxing events on board. If anyone remembers him, please feel free to let us know. He was from Providence RI.
