Obituary - Richard C. Sawtell

Richard C. Sawtell, 84




CAMBRIDGE - Richard C. Sawtell, 84, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, at Mary McClellan Hospital. He was the husband of Jeanette (Ladd) Sawtell.


Born June 3, 1918, in Wallingford, VT, he was the son of Franklin and Stella (Way) Sawtell.


The family moved to a farm in Buskirk and Richard attended school in Hoosick Falls.


He married Marjorie Mae (Roberts) Sawtell in 1941.


Richard proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was stationed on the USS Quincy.


Richard, Marjorie and their family of lovely daughters lived in Waterford and later on the family farm in Buskirk. After the death of his beloved wife in 1977, Richard moved to Cambridge.


He was a communicant of the former St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Buskirk and a member of Capt. Maxson Post 634 of the American Legion in Cambridge.


Richard had a passion for trains. He enjoyed riding them and collecting toy trains. He took his last train trip to Colorado last year. He liked playing horseshoes and watching old movies.


In his younger years he was a great piano player, especially playing jazz. He was self-taught and played by ear having never learned to read music.


Along with his first wife, Marjorie, he was predeceased by a sister, Norma Sawtell Carr, and an infant brother, Frank.


Survivors include his present wife; seven daughters and their husbands, Patricia and William Hoffmeister of Troy, Teresa and Gordon White of Boulder, CO, Gloria and Joseph D. Dubuke, Gail and Darryl Decker, Penny Severson, and Jacqueline E. Fedler, all of Cambridge, and Tamie and Mark J. Rosko of Schaghticoke; two sisters, Myrtie Haviland of Cambridge and Joan Snow of Bennington; a brother, Jim Sawtell of Oklahoma; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.


Friends and relatives are invited to call on Tuesday, Sept. 10, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Ackley & Ross Funeral Home, 73 West Main St., Cambridge. There will be an American Legion service at 7 p.m.


The funeral service will be at the funeral home on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, Schaghticoke.
