Bristol and Exeter Railway

Hi all.

I know absolutely nothing about the railways, but have taken a side route in my genealogy research.

My great great grandfather, John HUNT, joined the B&ER (I presume that would be the correct abbreviation!) in 1869 in the rolling stock department at Highbridge, Somerset.

In 1874, at the age of 22, he was appointed station master of Nailsea, Somerset, then moved to East Devon to Willand, where he lived while working as station master of Tiverton Junction.

He was first appointed at Tiverton in 1875, where he served for the next 45 years before his retirement in 1920.

I have a few queries which I hope someone could help with:

When did the B&ER become part of the GWR?

What did working in the rolling stock dept entail?

Was it common for someone to become a station master at such a young age?

Did station masters not live at the station they served at?

Thanks to all,

Tonia
