I am looking for information regarding the use of dogs to collect money for railway charities. My great-grandfather was a guard on the L&SWR and later Southern Railway and used Labrador Retrievers to collect donations from passengers for the Southern Orphanage at Woking. Whilst I have a lot of detail about his work I wonder if anyone can let me have information about other dogs.
I also know that many dogs after they died(although fortunately none of his) were stuffed and placed in cases on stations to continue getting donations. Most of the dogs were removed in the 1960s/70s as they conflicted with the modern BR image. I am interested to know what happened to them.
