Re: Powells , Creek or Seminole Indian?

I do not think the Powells in Hughes county or Indian . The only Powells i know are white. My mother is a Powell from Yeager , Okla. She was not creek or Seminole. I think she was Scot-Irish. She did claim that her grand mother was an Indian Princes. So it could be that she is a decendant of Oceola since he was known as "King of The Seminoes " He was a heraditary Cheif. I would love to meet with you and help with your research!! I belive mine is the Powell family you are looking for thru my mother!! I live in Paris , Texas . We could meet up here are i could meet you in Oklahoma.....good Luck!!!!

There's several Powell's in Hughes County that are Creek and Seminole.

Btw, Osceola was not a hereditary chief. He was only a war leader from the Tvlvsse tribal town in Alabama.

Re: Powells , Creek or Seminole Indian?

Well, this is a late posting to this message BUT my family is claiming Cheif Oceola as a great great great grandfather. Stories from my childhood of a renegade indian cheif who had intercourse with black slaves. My aunt was named Oceola, and she looks like an american indian as do some of her siblings. Somehow in some of the music I write, there is a tribal indian feel. Just comes out that way. Check out http://www.audiosparx.com/sa/artist/sounds.cfm/artist_iid.2228 in particular: Leycrehendai.

I think the connection comes from my grandfather's side of the family. His name Aaron Brown.
