day of Crucifixion

Greetings, Denis and Jerry. I'd like to add my five cents to George's question about the Wednesday or Friday crucifixion. It is extremely important that Jesus comply with the terms of the prophesy (three days and three nights in the tomb) as He mentioned in Matthew 12:38-40. No matter how we calculate, it is impossible to find three days and three nights under the traditional Friday crucifixion. Nor could we find a non-resting day on which the women could go to the market to buy spices and then go home to prepare them. However, it is not difficult to prove a Wednesday crucifixion with the Bible itself. If Jesus was crucified on Wednesday, we would have to demonstrate that in that week there were two Sabbaths or days of rest (Thursday and Saturday), and that there was a day of activities in between (Friday). In John 19:31 we read ".... the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), ..." The note in parenthesis makes it clear that the day after crucifixion was not a regular Sabbath, but a "high day", one of the seven yearly "high days" established in Leviticus 23 and Numbers 28 (in this case the feast of unleavened Bread, the 15th of Abib in the Jewish calendar) which that year fell on Thursday. This helps us find the two Sabbaths: Thursday (Feast of Unleavened Bread=high day), and the regular Saturday (weekly Sabbath.) Can we prove that there was a day of activities (Friday) between the two Sabbaths? You bet. Let's look at two verses: Mark 16:1 "Now when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices that they might come to anoint Him." Luke 23:56 "then they (the women) returned and prepared spices and fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment." If we put these two verses together, we find that after resting on the Sabbath (Unleavened Bread - Thursday), the women purchased and prepared their spices and oils (Friday - day of activities), and then they rested again on the weekly Sabbath (Saturday). Blessings, Carlos Montaño
