________________________________________________________

The game against Gulval Reserves was a wash out due to the weather and unfortunately the way in which the pitch holds the water especially down the middle meant that the team could not take the field and use the confidence gained from winning away at Chacewater to further their position in the league and push for promotion. Even though the team did not play, Portreath’s win over first place Chacewater, sees Threemilestone only 1 point off the top with a game in hand. Promotion is the priority; however, if the Stones win all their remaining games, which will not be an easy task, then they will be crowned Division Three champions.

This weekend will see Threemilestone take on Madron Reserves the bottom club. These fixtures are always the hardest to play as the team visiting Polstain Road have nothing to lose as they are expected to be lambs to the slaughter.

When you play against the top sides as a Manager you do not usually have to get the team up for the game, they are already there and know what is expected of them, the result just comes down to who is the better side at the end of the day, however, when the team comes against a side that they are expected to beat then complacency can set in. Players seem to think that they only have to turn up slip on the kit, knock the ball around for 90 minutes and the result will take care of itself, this is when shocks occur.

Why? Well the team at the bottom do not take the game as a stroll in the park and turn up, fired up knowing that if they can get a result it could do several things;

a. Kick start their season – giving them renewed confidence
b. Ensure they do not finish bottom
c. Give them self respect
d. Have some bragging rights after the game
e. Let’s their rivals know they are not giving up without a fight

The cup normally throws these type of results up, but the league can also produce the odd shock result during the campaign, therefore, the favourites have to be careful.

With the above in mind let’s concentrate on what the favourites should do to ensure that they do not become a victim of a SHOCK result. Firstly the players need to turn up fired up ready for the fight, especially if the conditions do not favour the team that plays football but a battle of the bulge, pure raw stamina and strength. Focus on the task at hand, winning and strengthening their league position. Every player that puts on the clubs shirt should be aware what is at stake and that if they under perform or take the game in a less than professional attitude then they will not only be letting themselves down, the team but also the club. At the end of the day it is all about ATTITUDE, the players know they have the ability and skill to beat their opponents but they need to also have the right attitude put both together and victory will be theirs.
