UP FOR THE CUP

The FA Cup threw up some surprising results over the weekend, Man Utd being beaten by Portsmouth who had not won at Old Trafford for FIFTY years. Although some pundits may say that this result was a surprise more than a shock as Portsmouth are a decent Premiership side who on their given day could beat anyone in the league.

The real shock was Barnsley beating Chelsea by one goal to nil. These types of upsets only happen every so often and it’s always embarrassing for the higher division team when they come along. Credit is not always given to the underdogs with supporters saying “Well the team are not worried about the cup” or “We put out a reserve side”, however in the above match Chelsea fielded a really strong side (although Lampard, Drogba, A Cole an Cech did not play) the team should have won with the ability and class of the players on show.

The reason for many of these upsets is that the underdog raises their game and if they catch the big boys on a bad day then they come away victorious. The match between the two could have been played another 20 times and I would say 19/20 Chelsea would see off the challenge of the Championship club, however, there will always be that one off game.

So with Cardiff putting out Middlesborough, WBA getting through five one against Bristol Rovers, the only representive of the top flight league is Portsmouth, who I hope will now go on and win it, not because they are a premiership side but because Harry Redknapp deserves some success as he is in my view an extremely good manager and should have been considered for the England job.

This weekend also saw the quarter finals of the Jolly Shield, maybe not one of the most prestigious cups within in the country but to the teams who made it that far just as important as the FA Cup itself.

As with the FA Cup two of the more favoured sides made it into the quarter finals, however, unlike Manchester Utd and Chelsea they both made it through to the semi finals, with the only shock being the five one defeat of Titans away at Guval, (although Gulval will probably dispute that, I am taking it on the league positions).

Chacewater won at home to Storm three goals to won, Threemilestone (league leaders) travelled to Wendron winning five nil, while Crown Inn Glory also won five nil away to Newlyn NA. Gulval made up the final four by beating Titans.

With the semi final draw already made, it seems that the top two could meet in the final, with Chacewater facing Crown Inn Glory and Threemilestone playing Gulval. It has to be said a Chacewater, Threemilestone final would be mouth watering proposition not only because they have been vying for the Division Three championship but also because it is a local derby.

I expect though the two other teams would like to have a say in that and if the Jolly Shield produces the same sort of drama as the FA Cup weekend did then we could see a totally different final with the two less fancied teams vying for the sivlerware.

Personally I hoping to see the derby final, it certainly will draw a crowd and for one of the teams it would mean a chance at a league and cup double season.

Re: UP FOR THE CUP

Patty I did mention it 2nd paragraph from the end of the piece, however, being that I do not even know where Crown Inn Glory play, I have to admit that I did not know that would be a derby game as well. Thanks for correcting me, for your reward you can run round the pitch at training an extra 3 times.

Jezza you know me what can be said in two words requires a who publication. Just thought it might be an idea to start a little stimulation on the old forum as it seems to have gone dead. Used to be quite a chatty forum.
