Jamie Lidell - groundbreaking performance in Brighton
Posted: Dec. 09 2005,18:04 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well, I've been to many thousands of gigs over the years and, literally, every decade or so you find yourself at a landmark gig...something very special indeed...at one such occassion was Jamie Lidell in Brighton tonight. He absolutely rocked the house...he was really banging...in front of a about 1,000 twenty-somethings (plus me!) at tonites sell out gig at Concorde. Armed with just a (huge) table of electronica, with more cables than an underground tube network, Jamie created a tapestry of sounds - some avante-garde, some less so - using mainly low frequency bass lines and voice, multi-tracking himself in real time, creating everything 'live' as he went along. Occassionally he got lost, sometimes he just got wild but, in any event, the level of excitment and imagination created was, for the most part, simply stunning. Vocally he threw the kitchen sink and then some into proceedings. He may be a tall, long haired, (good looking) middle class English kid but both vocally and performance wise he has more than a touch of the Otis Readings about him. Everything from his eyebrows to his toes projects his vocal delivery..he absolutely bangs it...and tonight he hit all the targets. Snatches of his album were recognised...he literally did a verse or two of some of the cuts here and there but, generally, he was into creating soundscapes, some of which bore little or no resemblance to the record. But this is a good thing. At times he killed the music entirely and just acapelled his way through a song, his body being a kind of human beat box driving things along. Really astonishing delivery. A wonder to behold. Other times, like on the encore 'Multiply', he just let the crowd sing most of the song once he got past the second verse. I think he was truly moved by the audience reaction..everybody was in to it...and they were still chanting for a second encore some full twenty minutes after he had first left the stage. Maybe his gigs are a bit hit and miss - a lot of it seems to rely on improvisation - but, truly, this was one of the greatest concerts I've been to for a decade. Truly an event. |
