I have never forgotten Michael Billington's quietly powerful portrayal of Daniel Fogarty in the Onedin Line - a wonderful rival to the character of James Onedin. He was not in every episode, only about once a fortnight as I remember, but when he was on I was almost spellbound by his character! He was like a breath of fresh air after the stuffy, confining ways of the other 'Victorian' characters.I have just returned from another boat trip on the beautiful River Dart in Devon. Every time I have taken this lovely trip, the comment is always made that 'The Onedin Line' was filmed there,in place of the Amazon! (I suppose the B.B.C. could not afford to go to such an exotic location?) For me 'Daniel Fogarty' was one of the 'must see' characters of the '70's, and I am sad to learn that Michael Billington has passed on. Thankyou Michael for the portrayal of a character that brightened up my Sunday evenings! May you always be remembered with affection. |
